While travelling through the Lake District you may suddenly come across a field full of cars, with men and women standing with binoculars in hand, a line of people will be shouting and cheering, calling out names and blowing whistles. You may wonder what you have stumbled upon and then you realise that this is Hound Trailing – one of Cumbria’s oldest and most popular sports.
If you want to see Hound Trailing in all it’s excitement and spectacle, come along to Grasmere Sports & Show on the 24th of August. Watch the hounds leave the showfield and race off up the fells surrounding Grasmere. Marvel at their speed and agility as they clear walls and fences to be the first home to their owners. This has to be one of the most beautifully situated events anywhere in the world.

Dating back to the 18th century, Hound Trailing is one of Cumbria’s oldest and most popular pastimes with meetings taking place up and down the Lakeland countryside… Over the years Hound Trailing gained popularity within the local Lakeland communities, and in 1906 the governing body, the Hound Trailing Association (HTA) was formed under the direction of Robert Jefferson (Whitehaven).
Since then the sport has grown under the Association’s guidance and at present has more than five hundred members. New members are always welcomed.
