GRASMERE SPORTS 2021 - NEWS & UPDATE ON SPORTS
2021 Sports Day
We have been busy behind the scenes planning our 2021 Sports, and very much hope that we will be able to welcome you all back to the Sports Field for our traditional event on Sunday 29th August 2021. News of the latest situation will be posted here, as and when it is available.
Work on the Sports Field
Unfortunately, the flooding that the Sports Field has suffered in recent years has led to damage to the area behind the Pavilion in particular and work will begin on the 22nd March to rectify this and use up material stored at the end of the Sports Field by the mini-roundabout.
This work will involve machinery removing the topsoil, installation of drains and reprofiling of the area and will probably look quite alarming whilst it is going on. Hopefully we will be left with a drier, level area and will have used the excess materials from the corner of the field.
New Chairman and Directors
We have also had a few changes with new Directors and a new Chairman Mr John Hibbert. After many years of service Hal Bagot has stepped down and is now Vice Chairman. Our new Chairman John said “Being Chairman of Grasmere Sports Committee Ltd is a great privilege and I have always held the longstanding traditions of both the community and the Sports in great respect. My family have been involved in the Sports for several generations, and all my children have taken part in Guides races since early childhood, though I may have missed my chance some time ago!"
Improving what we offer to visitors and those taking part in the Sports is very important to us. Please let me know through https://www.grasmeresports.com/contact-us/ if you have any ideas which may help shape the future of the Sports.
The 2021 Annual Grasmere Lakeland Sports, now celebrating 170 years of existence, has been a regular annual event since 1868, unbroken except for the two periods of the First and Second World Wars, and now in 2020 for Covid-19. Now one of the most popular traditional events in the English Lake District, participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trails.
