GRASMERE SPORTS 2021 - NEWS & UPDATE ON SPORTS

2021 GRASMERE SPORTS CANCELLED

We are very sorry to announce that the 2021 Grasmere Sports will not be going ahead as scheduled on 29th August 2021.

The Directors have been determined to carry on with the Sports and explored numerous ways of doing so – but the changes to the Covid-19 roadmap and continuing uncertainty surrounding regulations has beaten us all in the end.   The risks involved with going ahead were simply too great and we have reluctantly decided to focus all our energies on coming back with a bumper Sports in 2022.

We remain passionately committed to promoting the sports and showcasing the Lakeland way of life and will be back with our traditional event on 28th August 2022.

Speaking on behalf of Grasmere Sports Committee Ltd, the Chairman John Hibbert, says, “We debated this at length with a firm ambition to hold a Sports Day of some kind,  but finally found the risks to everyone just too great.  The Committee directors agreed that to try to proceed in any form in 2021 would be a mistake”.

“We are confident that the love of the Sports will enable us to attract crowds in 2022 and build back better than ever, delivering the flavour of traditional Lakeland culture and sports as we have done for nearly 170 years.”

Work on the Sports Field and fellside

We are pleased that the drainage and reprofiling of the area behind the Pavilion has been completed and it now looks as it did before - but shouldn't flood as badly.

Work has also been completed installing a new drainage system on the fellside opposite the Sports Field and should improve the flow of water in periods of heavy rain.

GRASMERE SPORTS

The 2021 Annual Grasmere Lakeland Sports, now celebrating 170 years of existence, has been a regular annual event since 1868, unbroken except for the two periods of the First and Second World Wars, and now in 2020 for Covid-19. Now one of the most popular traditional events in the English Lake District, participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trails.
