Grasmere Sports is commemorating the life of Roger Robson by presenting a new trophy to the Under 12s Boys and Girls Mixed Wrestling category.
Roger passed away in January 2021 aged 78 and was a giant in the world of Cumbrian wrestling. He was a Grasmere champion at 12 stones in 1964, 1970 and 1980 and was awarded the Grasmere Guinness Trophy for best performance in 1964.
After retiring from competition, Roger was the wrestling manager for many years, encouraging younger boys and girls to participate. In 2019 he saw his granddaughter, Gemma Coulthard win the Grasmere Ladies Open Championship.
From 1978 until 2019 he produced a weekly report on Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling in the Cumberland News. He was also President of the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling Association from 2005 until 2009 and in 2011.
