“Man,but that was some grand sport. Runnin' and jumpin' – they war beath fust rate – but of course, wrestling an’ t’ fell race is what meast on us go t’ see at Grasmere”. (Cumberland Herald 1952)
Some things have changed in the last 73 years but “Grasmere – Lakelands Premier athletic gathering” is still the August Bank Holidays place to go if you want to experience the unique spectacles that form the core of Grasmere Sports – Cumberland and Westmorland World Championship Wrestling, Hound Trailing and Fell Racing.
Last weekend saw the culmination of the Wrestling Academies annual competitive endeavours at the Academy Shield night. At a literally packed event, standing room only, Carlisle Academy lifted the Academy Shield after some hard fought bouts. It was a wonderful inclusive event with 32 entries in the Under 12 category – girls and boys! It’s great to see the sport alive and well with so many young people coming through.
Grasmere Sports again will be hosting reprentatives from all of the Academies as well as wrestlers from other back-hold traditions – Bretons, Icelanders, Scots and possibly other nationalities this time. Keep checking on the website to see who the final line-up will be on the day. One thing’s for sure, you won’t be disappointed with your visit to this unique event – “Glorious Grasmere”.
