A Whitehaven teenager has made a big step towards his aim of one day being a sports reporter by being named Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show's Young Sports Reporter 2024.
Harry Taylor (13), entered the contest by describing why he thought he would make a great reporter. Having been selected, he was then invited to attend Grasmere Sports Show on 25th August and set the task of producing a report on one of the sports competitions on the day.
Before the show, Harry was given a briefing and some expert coaching by Jane Hunt who owns Catapult PR, the agency that provides PR for this historic annual event. Harry also showed a huge amount of initiative by talking with Carlisle United Football Club's media officer for some further inspiration.
On the day of the show, Harry attended with his family and in spite of challenging weather conditions including monsoon like rainfall, managed to produce a highly engaging report of the Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling competition. Harry was then presented with his Young Sports Reporter 2024 trophy by the Grasmere Sports committee in addition to a new camera worth £120 and certificate.

Harry said "It was great fun to write the report and a very valuable experience that I'm sure will help me achieve my dream of one day becoming a sports reporter. I've picked up some useful tips but have also been able to apply them in a really exciting way, combining what I've learned about sports reporting with general writing skills picked up at school."
Harry attended the presentation with his mum and dad, Jennifer and Darren, and his younger brother Rex. Harry and his family have been invited back to next year's 175th Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show where we hope the weather will be better than 2024!
