This years Grasmere Sports Show showcased the determination and resilience of spectators and participants thanks to relentless rain. As dark clouds loomed over the towering fells, sports enthusiasts, families and participants gathered for the 174th anniversary of the traditional event.
Hundreds of attendees arrived all clothed in waterproofs and wellies ready to cheer on the competitors. Traditional events at the highly anticipated show included Hound trails, fell running and Cumberland wrestling.
The wrestling that has been a long established favourite at the show proved this year that the next generation could achieve great things. As competitors grappled in the squelchy mud to the sounds of the Fat Cat Brass Band. The competition was fierce in the varied categories including new for this year the Roger Robson memorial trophy. The muddy ring added an extra challenge and elevated the excitement of the spectators who gathered to watch as children grappled and threw their opponents.
In the under 10 stone, under 18s competition Robbie Pigg retained his world title against Charlie Armstrong in a thrilling match. In the boys under 18 category Bobby Stewart stood out as one to watch. After a lengthy match with Max Butler, Stewart moved onto the semi finals. Eventually coming 4th. Stewart who came 1st in the boys under 15 category at Grayrigg show only a few days before, proved himself a formidable opponent.
Every year the Grasmere show continues to showcase the very best of Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and ensures that the next generation can carry on this historical sport.
